American Attorney Zachary D Norris of Norris Echetebu Law presented the first of Meteoroid and Wharf42 Program free tech webinars for Kiwi start-ups ‘Understanding US Company Structures & Legal Contracts’.

In the first of the Wharf42′s and Meteoroid’s free tech webinars below, Mr Norris talks about the different company structures available to New Zealand tech businesses looking to establish a formal presence in the US. He also talks about the imperative that professional legal advise is taken from qualified US legal attorneys when entering any legal contract in the US.

Getting your company structure right is critical. Ditto: Legal contracts. Fail here and the consequences can be grave.

NEC Partner, Ada Echetebu spoke as the US Legal and Regulatory Affairs expert at the American Chamber of Commerce New Zealand’s ‘Doing Business with the USA’ event in Christchurch on November 7, 2013. Ms. Ada Echetebu spoke about the importance of Kiwi entrepreneurs investing in proper US legal counsel prior to embarking on and participating in the potentially highly-lucrative US markets. Ms. Echetebu discussed the differences between the Kiwi and US styles of doing business and in approaching legal matters, cautioning that Kiwis must avoid “doing business on a handshake and a smile” with their US counterparts. The importance of well-drafted agreements which are enforceable in the US was also emphasized. Ms. Echetebu also stated that hiring good US counsel to enforce agreements can often times avoid the pitfalls of costly litigation for which the US is known, adding that “often times Norris Echetebu Law acts as “guard dogs” for our clients– we are there to insist on performance of our Kiwi clients’ contracts and we often can get the US party to perform without having to resort to courts or arbitration.”

On March 28, 2013, Norris Echetebu Law’s partners, Ada Echetebu and Zachary D Norris had the extreme privilege of attending a private lunch with US Ambassador to New Zealand, His Excellency David Huebner at the private residence of US Consul General in Auckland. The lunch was a meeting of the top echelon of US business leaders in Auckland and was the inaugural American Business Leaders Roundtable luncheon.

Approach to Drugs: New Zealand is not new to the drug epidemic.

Approach to Drugs in New Zealand, American style: However, the wheels of justice turn very slow and the New Zealand legal system is now looking to modernise its approach to the drug epidemic. Just Minister Judith Collins decision to install an American style drug court in Auckland will likely lead to a very beneficial effect on offenders, as it fosters treatment of drug addiction rather than punishment as the main goal.

This, in turn, leads to a lesser likelihood for repeat offenders. Drug courts in the United States have been very successful under American law in reducing the amount of repeat offenders. While the drug problem is not something that has either been solved the the American legal system or the New Zealand legal system, society through law can encourage proper behaviour and rehabilitate an offender to become a meaningful member of society again.

Master of Laws: Norris Legal Consulting congratulates its Principal, Zachary D. Norris on the completion of his Master of Laws (LL.M.) requirements.

On 10 October 2012, Mr. Norris, Master of Laws, submitted his L.L.M. Research Portfolio at the University of Auckland Postgraduate Faculty of Law. Mr. Norris’ portfolio, supervised by Professor Peter Watts, consists of three papers:
